Game On: Behind the Scenes of Alex’s Epic Gamer Party

Although the last balloons from his arch have yet to be popped, we’ve finally recovered from Alex’s 8th birthday party over here! After last year’s epic Minecraft bash, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to plan another video game-related party, but it ended up being such a blast! Plus, seeing Alex’s excitement and getting all the extra hugs made it more than worth it. Here’s everything you need to recreate the fun—consider this your cheat code for an epic gamer party!

The Party Setup

Whenever I plan a party theme, I start with the color scheme first. This time, I was inspired by some adorable tableware I’d been eyeing—blue, green, and gray for a fresh, modern gamer vibe. Coincidentally, this tied in perfectly with the creeper wall from last year that Alex insisted I recreate—so, it was a win-win! With the overall party vibe locked in, I focused next on the must-have party elements that took this gamer party to the next level.

Must-Haves for a Fun + Insta-Worthy Setup

  1. Table Runner: This might sound minor, but a great table runner is a game-changer! It divides the space and adds contrast + visual interest. I went with a black-and-white checkered pattern—a nod to Alex’s signature accessory, checkered Vans—to add a personal touch.

  2. Confetti: Is it messy? A little. Is it worth it? Absolutely. I sprinkled blue, green, and white paper confetti on the tables, along with some gold coins for a fun video game touch. The kids went crazy for the coins, so naturally, they all took a few home!

  3. Focal Point: Every party needs at least one! We did a balloon arch in coordinating colors and the creeper plate wall. Both look impressive but are totally doable (seriously, check out our step-by-step tutorials here!).

  4. Themed Cake: Luckily for me, my sister is an amazing baker, and she created an epic gamer-themed vanilla cake with cinnamon frosting, per Alex’s request. She topped it with store-bought video game figurines + matching candies, and the result was just *chef’s kiss* perfection! (Thanks, sis!)

  5. Balloons: If balloon arches feel like too much, enter my true love: balloon stands. Every party box we offer includes this option because they’re a foolproof, helium-free way to create a fun display in just 10 minutes (or less!). The best part? They can be assembled 1-2 days before your event with zero worries.

  6. Signs: Signage is an easy way to personalize your party and make it feel extra special. A welcome sign, a favor sign, or even an activity station sign adds a polished, Pinterest-inspired touch.

  7. Something Personalized: We customized video game drink tumblers that doubled as place settings. The kids loved them, and honestly, I could have skipped everything else and just handed these out as favors!

Speaking of…the Favors

This part didn’t go as planned! My original idea was mini handheld video games—useful favors perfect for road trips that wouldn’t be immediately tossed as junk—but they didn’t arrive in time (lesson learned: always order early!). So, I improvised by stuffing the adorable game-themed favor boxes with video game stickers, notepads, erasers, Pop Rocks, and mini pixel magnets. I also set up an ‘Adopt-a-Game-Friend’ station with video game character figurines. The kids loved it, so even though it wasn’t my original plan, it still worked out!

The Main Attraction: The Game Truck

I’ll keep this diplomatic: the game truck was fine, but I wouldn’t recommend the company we used. That said, here’s the good and the not-so-good:

Pros:

  • The kids were so excited for it! No need for additional activities—it was (supposed to be) a one-and-done setup.

  • It had most of the games Alex and his friends love, and they let me approve which ones were available for the kids to play.

  • The truck fit up to 20 kids, so I let Alex invite 16 friends—well over his usual home-party max of 8-10!

  • A two-hour play window meant plenty of game time, even for latecomers.

Cons:

  • The truck was over 20 minutes late and needed another 15 minutes to set up. Not ideal when you’ve planned your party timeline around the activity and have a house full of hyper kids waiting!

  • The generator gave off a strong exhaust smell, making it a bit unpleasant inside.

  • The employee running the truck wasn’t very enthusiastic or engaging, which made it harder for the kids to feel comfortable asking questions.

  • After about an hour, more than half of the kids came inside, saying it was too loud and overwhelming with the noise, smell, and the different controllers they weren’t used to. I thought for sure I’d be dragging them all out of the truck when time was up!

Lessons Learned:

  • Even when you confirm a couple of days before, be sure to double-check timing with vendors the day of to avoid surprises.

  • Ask detailed questions about setup, equipment, game options, and party hosts.

  • Have a backup activity ready in case something doesn’t go as planned. We ended up putting on The Super Mario Bros. Movie when the truck lost its appeal…but only after our basement was under layers of toys and popcorn - ha!

The Most Important Part

At the end of the day, the kids had an absolute blast. Alex got to celebrate with his best friends, there was plenty of food (especially donuts and cake, which was all the kids cared about!), and the parents who stayed enjoyed catching up over coffee and, of course, mimosas.

I learned long ago that there’s no such thing as a perfect party. But parties aren’t about perfection—they’re about joy, celebration, and making memories (the real happy hours!) with the people you love. And if joy includes a floor covered in popcorn and a house that looks like a tornado hit it, then we nailed it!
