Easy Entertaining : Start a Book Club!

Once upon a time, we moved onto a block with a book club that had been going for over TWENTY years. A fairytale come true! Living among these fantastic ladies not only introduced me to amazing neighbors but also rekindled my love for reading. Without them, I might still be stuck in the realm of parenting books (if that). Thanks to this incredible group, my reading journey has taken off in unexpected directions, all thanks to the diverse ages, backgrounds, and personalities that make up our bookish crew.

Whenever I tell people about this magical club, I often hear responses like, "I've always wanted to start a book club, but I don't know how." Well, my friends, it's a breeze, and I hope it brings you as much joy as it brings me. No need to overly complicate it - read on to turn your love for books into a rewarding social affair!

Chapter 1: Assemble Your Squad

Round up some fellow book enthusiasts. If you’re not sure where to begin, try your neighbors! Not only is it a great way to build community, but the location(s) will be convenient for all who attend. If neighbors aren’t an option, grab some friends, co-workers, or even that mom you chat with at soccer practice. The more diverse, the more fun!

Chapter 2: Define Your Style

Decide on the club's vibe. Are you diving deep into literary analysis, or is a more laid-back and casual approach your style? Our club often unintentionally switches between serious reads, historical fiction, hidden gems, and current bestsellers, which keeps things interesting for all!

Chapter 3: Choose a Kick-Off Book

Selecting that first book is key. Aim for something universally appealing and not too lengthy to avoid scaring off potential members. Maybe a bestseller or a classic with a modern twist?

Chapter 4: Lock in a Schedule

Life gets hectic, so pick a regular meeting time that suits everyone. Whether it's a monthly weekend brunch or a weekday evening, consistency is key. For us, the third Thursday of each month is the goal (but the host for the month gets to pick the ultimate date).

Chapter 5: Discuss and Celebrate Diverse Opinions

Our meetings usually kick off with mingling, catching up, nibbling on snacks, and sipping wine. When we gather for discussion, one person takes the lead (the host or book club organizer). Whatever approach you take, make sure to create an open environment for discussion. Everyone interprets books differently, and that's the beauty of it. Embrace diverse opinions, and remember, it's okay to disagree!

Chapter 6: Mix Things Up

Keep the excitement alive by exploring different genres, authors, and themes! This way, you'll discover a wide range of literary gems. Rotate who gets to choose the book each month. In our club, we alternate who hosts, and that person chooses the book. You’ll find me hosting in the summer when I feel good about choosing a no-pressure page-turner - ha!

Conclusion: Your Adventure Begins!

Congratulations! You've just embarked on a bookish journey that promises laughter, insights, and, most importantly, cherished moments with your newfound literary companions. Get ready for a page-turning adventure in the world of books and friendship!

Epilogue: Squeeze Reading into Your Busy Life

If you're thinking, "Sounds great, but I have no time to read," I feel you! I "read" 70% of my books on Audible (try a free trial here!) or if I’m lucky, snag them for free on Libby. Listening to books has been a game-changer, making everyday tasks like folding laundry, putting away groceries, and running errands more enjoyable. Pro tip: For a treat try listening in the bathtub with a glass of wine!

Appendix: Book Club Favorites

Ready to start, but not sure where to start book-wise? I’ve listed some of my favorite reads from our book club that have sparked great conversation. Happy reading, and may your book club be filled with endless joy and captivating tales!
