Easy Entertaining : How to Create the Ultimate Hot Chocolate Bar

My favorite new addition to our Christmas setup this year is our hot chocolate bar! Alex’s friends are constantly requesting cocoa with all the trimmings, so I figured—why not make it easy for them to DIY? Setting up a hot chocolate station was surprisingly easy using lots of items I already owned, and it’s been a huge hit with kids and grown-ups alike. If you want to create one in your own home, here’s how to do it!

Pick the Perfect Spot

Choose a cozy corner or a console table to set up your station. I used a small table and added a striped runner to pull it all together. The runner not only looks cute but keeps things from sliding around! Click to shop my favorite runners below.

Add Festive Decor

Bring the holiday spirit with a mix of decorations. I went with a cheerful garland, a colorful “Merry Christmas” sign, and a statement red-and-white striped star lantern for a little flair. The “These Are the Days” sign adds a sweet reminder to soak in these special moments. Click to shop my favorite decor picks below!

Mugs that Spark Joy

Gather a variety of holiday-themed mugs. I added a tray to keep them organized—plus, it keeps them from getting knocked off the table by accident! From classic Santa to one for the grownups, these mugs add an extra dash of charm. Click to shop my favorite picks below!

Toppings Galore

The toppings are what make a hot chocolate bar so much fun. Here are the must-haves I included, all displayed in clear jars for a festive touch:

Cocoa Essentials

Keep your hot chocolate mix front and center in a cute jar. Don’t forget scoops or spoons to make serving a breeze. I also like to keep whipped cream in the fridge so it’s ready for the finishing touch. And for the adults? A bottle of peppermint schnapps in a cabinet nearby can turn a cozy cocoa into a festive holiday cocktail!

Cozy Vibes

To make it feel extra festive, add some decorative canisters, along with a sprinkling of mini Christmas trees, fairy lights, or ornaments. I love how the glass Christmas tree filled with silver + gold ornaments in my setup adds a bit of sparkle without taking up too much space. Click to shop my favorite picks below!

Easy Cleanup

With kids (and their friends!) in and out, having napkins and extra spoons or stirrers handy makes life so much easier. Small plates for used candy canes or other sweets is a great addition, too.

Why I Love This Setup

Not only does this hot chocolate bar make our house feel extra festive, but it’s also become a little tradition for Alex and his friends. Whether they’re warming up after playing in the snow or just stopping by, it’s the first thing they ask about—and honestly, I don’t blame them!

I hope this inspires you to create your own hot chocolate bar this season. It’s such a fun way to spread a little holiday cheer—and the perfect excuse to drink more cocoa while soaking in the real happy hours!
